Middle School Science Minute

I was recently reading the Winter 2012-2013 issue of Green Teacher Magazine, a magazine that cares about Education for Planet Earth.  I read an article entitled “Zambian Girl Inspires Water Action” written by Michelle Macdonald.  It traces the story of a girl named Tikho, who lives in Zambia.  She was asked to share the story of her daily life as it related to water, sanitation and hygiene.  Her story has provided an example for North American youth to recognize local and global water challenges and look for solutions.

Reading Like a History

The Reading Like a Historian curriculum engages students in historical inquiry. Each lesson revolves around a central historical question and features sets of primary documents designed for groups of students with diverse reading skills and abilities.
This curriculum teaches students how to investigate historical questions by employing reading strategies such as sourcing, contextualizing, corroborating, and close reading. Providing a solution to students who don’t want to carry a laptop while walking late at night from their dorm or off-campus housing to the library, Drexel introduced a 24-hour, self-service kiosk located in its Hagerty Library that will dispense MacBooks to students, faculty and staff. Drexel is the third university on the East Coast to introduce the vending machine, which holds up to 12 MacBooks that could be checked out free by anyone with a Drexel ID for five hours of use.

Middle School Science Minute — Citizen Science

I was recently reading the November, 2012 issue of Science Scope, a publication of the National Science Teachers Association.  In the magazine, Jennifer Fee and Nancy Trautmann, wrote an article entitled “Connecting to Your Community Through Birds and Citizen Science.”  Within the article they explained what is meant by the term “Citizen Science.”  They defined a citizen scientist as a person who collaborates with scientists to gather data on projects and contributes to scientific research.

Departing Space Station Commander Provides Tour of Orbital Laboratory

In her final days as Commander of the International Space Station, Sunita Williams of NASA recorded an extensive tour of the orbital laboratory and downlinked the video on Nov. 18, just hours before she, cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Flight Engineer Aki Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency departed in their Soyuz TMA-05M spacecraft for a landing on the steppe of Kazakhstan. The tour includes scenes of each of the station’s modules and research facilities with a running narrative by Williams of the work that has taken place and which is ongoing aboard the orbital outpost.

We need to survey districts to find out what their strategies are.
Conference attendees are not always repeaters and so they don’t get the benefit of having repeating presenters.

How do we get a piece of legislation codified in 50 different locals?

Goal 3:  Develop partnerships and collaborative relationships with affiliates and other coalitions to influence programs and legislation to improve middle level education.
•3.1:  Update the “Success inthe Middle” policy guide as a tool for influencing public policy and education standards.
•3.2:  Provide advocacy tools for AMLE members and partners.
•3.3:  Provide resources relevant to targeted education policy issues.
•3.4:  Engage with the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association to enhance their understanding of the needs of middle grades youth.

A tourist in Vienna goes through a graveyard and all of a sudden he hears some music. No one is around, so he starts searching for the source.
He finally locates the origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads: “Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827.”
Then he realizes that the music is the Ninth Symphony, and it is being played backward! Puzzled, he leaves the graveyard and persuades a friend to return with him. By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has changed. This time it is the Seventh Symphony, but like the previous piece, it is being played backward. Curious, the men agree to consult a music scholar.
When they return with the expert, the Fifth Symphony is playing, again backward. The expert notices that the symphonies are being played in the reverse order in which they were composed, the 9th, then the 7th, then the 5th.

Troy Patterson, of the “Middle School Matters” podcast mentioned Raspberry Pi recently, and it got me to wondering if most people knew what it is.  Raspberry Pi is is a credit-card sized computer which can help kids do spreadsheets, play games, watch HD videos and learn programming, all for about $25.

It got me to thinking of other “Do It Yourself” gadgets that middle school students might also enjoy.  This then took me to the Public Laboratory:

Historical Figure Greeting Cards

This morning I used the web version of the Trading Card Creator to create an Abraham Lincoln trading card. To create the card I found a public domain image of Lincoln, uploaded it to the template provided by RWT, and completed the fields that asked for information about Lincoln’s life. When my card was completed I was able to download it to my computer. I could have also emailed it to myself or to a friend.

Homework

A study led by an Indiana University School of Education faculty member finds little correlation between time spent on homework and better course grades for math and science students, but a positive relationship between homework time and performance on standardized tests.
Contrary to much of the published research, a regression analysis of time spent on homework and the final class grade found no substantive difference in grades between students who complete homework and those who do not. But the analysis found a positive association between student performance on standardized tests and the time they spent on homework.
The authors suggest in their conclusions that other factors such as class participation and attendance may mitigate the association of homework to stronger grade performance.
“We’re not trying to say that all homework is bad,” Maltese said. “It’s expected that students are going to do homework. This is more of an argument that it should be quality over quantity. So in math, rather than doing the same types of problems over and over again, maybe it should involve having students analyze new types of problems or data. In science, maybe the students should write concept summaries instead of just reading a chapter and answering the questions at the end.”

Tips for helping Children with Impulse control
In class do not allow students to raise hands or blurt answers.  When asking for a response require students to wait 10-15 seconds before calling on someone randomly (I pick up from a cup of craft sticks with the name of a different student on each one).
•  Model “think alouds” for the students.
1.  The adult performs a task while “thinking out loud.”  For example, “Before I start to do this activity.  I need to read all the directions.  After I read all of the directions, I will check and make sure all of the materials are here.  Then I will begin with step #1.

3.  The student performs the task while instruction them self out loud.
Teach students the “Stop and Think” 5 step problem solving strategy:
1.  “What am I supposed to do?”  (Figure out what exactly what the problem is.)
2.  “Look at all the possibilities
•  Role play with the students the problem and possible solutions that occur in recurring social events.
•  Use a timer to indicate periods of independent work and reinforce appropriate behavior with positive feedback.
•  Use the words “For now . . . ”
“I don’t want to do this.”  “That’s ok, you’ll do this ‘for now’.”
Steps in Deliberate Practice.
•  Remember that deliberate practice has one objective:  to improve performance. ” People who play tennis once a week for years don’t get any better if they do the same thing each time.”  Ericson has said, “Deliberate practice is about changing your performance, setting new goals and straining yourself to reach a bit higher each time.”
•  Repeat, repeat, repeat.  Repetition matters.  Basketball greats don’t shoot ten free throws at the end of team practice, they shoot five hundred.
•  Seek constant, critical feedback.  If you don’t know how you’re doing, you won’t know what to improve.
•  Focus ruthlessly on where you need help.  while many of us work on what we’re already good at, says Ericsson, “those who get better work on their weakness.”
•  Prepare for the process to be mentally and physically exhausting.  that’s why so many people . . see handout.
Motivation:
Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation
Psychological reactance relates to a classic distinction made by motivational psychologists:  the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motives.  An activity intrinsically motivating if a person does it voluntarily, without receiving payment or other type of reward.  An activity is extrinsically motivated if it is performed primarily for external reinforcement such as food or money.

What are classroom rewards?
•  Extrinsic rewards can be denied as rewards that come from an aoutside source such as the teacher.  Rewards include the obvious bonuses such as prizes, certificates, special privileges, gold stars, stickers, candy gum, redeemable tokens, grades, or even money.  Teacher praise is also considered to be an extrinsic reward as are more subtle signs of approval such as thumbs up signs, smiles, nods, hugs, or pats on the back.
•  Intrinsic rewards can be defined as rewards that are inherent or the natural consequence of behavior.
Activity:  Describe how praise can sometimes do more harm than good.  Give examples from your experience.
Using Classroom Rewards
•  Task-contingent rewards are available to students for merely participating in an activity without regard to any standard of performance (i.e. anyone who turns in a homework paper gets an A.)
-Detrimental to motivation
•  Performance-contingent rewards are available only when the student achieves a certain standard (i.e. anyone who has at least 93% correct responses on the homework paper gets a sticker.)
*  Success-contingent rewards are given for good performance and might reflect either success or progress towards a goal (i.e. anyone who has at least 93% correct responses on the homework paper or improves from their previous score.)
Guidelines for using Classroom Rewards
•Use the weakest reward required to strengthen a behavior.
•When possible, avoid using rewards as incentives.
•Reward at a high rate in the early stages of learning and reduce the frequency of rewards as learning . . .

This podcast is based on the article “STEM Across Middle Grades Curriculum,” written by Chad Pavlekovich, Jenny Benardi, and Jayne Malach.  It was published in the August 2012 edition of “Middle Ground,” a magazine published by the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE). Salisbury MIddle School in Salisbury, Maryland has had a STEM program for three years.  The program serves 90 students, 30 in each grade level.  The STEM program includes three core subjects (science, ELA, history), technology education, and computer science.

Teachers, Cheating, and Incentives

 

In recent years there seems to have been a surge in academic dishonesty in high schools.

To think about the effects of these measurements, let’s first think about corporate America, where measurement of performance has a much longer history.

So how does this story of mis-measurements in corporate America relate to teaching? I suspect that any teachers reading this see the parallels. The mission of teaching, and its evaluation, is incredibly intricate and complex.

Interestingly, the outrage over teachers cheating seems to be much greater than the outrage over the damage of mis-measurement in the educational system and over the No Child Left Behind Act more generally.

Maybe it is time to think more carefully about how we want to educate in the first place, and stop worrying so much about tests.

A running theme that the only thing that matters is test scores

Notice the running theme throughout all these — that just about the only indicator of childrens wellbeing that matters anymore is how well they score on standardized tests? Hard to remember now that once upon a time, when Americans talked about children, healthy “hearts and lungs” were thought to be a pretty important condition for their own sake. Yet now that test scores have become the holy grail of education, other really important indicators of children’s well being — their health, their opportunities to learn about the arts, their intrinsic love of learning — seem passé.

of an enormous queue outside the gates of Heaven. The queue before him is enormous. The number of
people who die in a single day appalls him. He can barely see St. Peter sitting up on a podium outside the
gates with a large book. Every now and then St. Peter glances down the queue to see how he is going.
Suddenly he catches the eye of the lawyer. He looks very surprised. He jumps down from the podium

Josh Fullan wrote an article entitled, “Pedestrian City,” for the magazine Green Teacher, summer edition
2012.  The purpose of the article was to present a way that middle school students could investigate the
walkability of their urban neighborhoods.  He presented three activities:
Learning Activity 1:  Introduction to walking as a mode of transportation.
Learning Activity 2:  Experiential lesson on walking in which the teacher leads the students on a
neighborhood walk.
Learning Activity 3:  Culminates the unit with a creative hands-on activity on walking in which students
create a hand-drawn map of a walk they do regularly.

The Historical Society made a coloring book of each place and put the QR Code in the book with the

Middle School Science Minute

In the Summer, 2012 issue of Science Scope, a publication of the National Science Teachers Association, the safety question of the month was “After lab work, should students use antibacterial hand wipes or just plain soap and water to clean their hands?”

Ken Roy, director of environmental health and safety for Glastonbury Public Schools in Glastonbury, Connecticut provides a great answer.  If you would like more information on science safety, you can purchase Ken’s book, “The NSTA Ready-Reference Guide to Safer Science,” through the NSTA bookstore.

ISTE Keynote: What were they thinking?

As I have said before in this blog, I attend edtech conferences to be inspired and to steal ideas to take back to my own school. But when I left the keynote that opened this year’s ISTE 2012 Conference, I was scratching my head wondering what was the purpose of what I had just witnessed. I felt embarrassed to be an educator. Did ISTE really just do this to me? Did they sell out? Did they take inspiring me too far?

Conference with iPad

So for ISTE 2012, I didn’t bring a laptop. Rather, I’m relying on my iPad and iPhone only.
Here are some of my thoughts:

Pros:
• Light weight. I really, really like not carrying around the 6 pound laptop.
• Ability to quickly capture audio, images and notes. Audio is kept in sync with the text.
• Flexibility. I use an external keyboard. Being able to just put my keyboard in my lap and set the iPad on the chair (next to or in front of me) or on the floor (in my bag) is very handy. Feels much less cumbersome. Barriers do make a difference. This is a much, much lower barrier.
• Battery life. It is AWESOME to not have to worry about finding a plug. It’s also nice to not have to constantly calculate how much longer before you need to find an outlet.

Cons:
• I usually take my notes and combine them into a “booklet”. To do this, I utilize Headings and other styles. This is not available on my notetaking software that I’m using. Thus, I’ll have to take some time when I get back to pull the notes together.

ISTE Walk

We had a good chat on the walk back to the Hotel. Specifically, we chatted about the Panel Discussion at ISTE2012 Conference.

Here is a snippet of that conversation. But first an overview:

The Panel was comprised of Sir Kenneth Robinson, Shawn Covell, Marc Prensky, and Mayim Bialik.

Sir Kenneth Robinson is very polished and graceful on stage. He was definitely selling his book, but was funny and engaging. He talked about how he was told Americans don’t get irony. That isn’t true, he said. After all, we have No Child Left Behind. Whoever named that sure understood irony. He also talked about how we can’t afford to not make changes to education.

Shawn Covell was representing QualComm. She is a political representative for them. Her role was really representing QualComm and their upcoming conference. Predictably, her focus was completely on wireless access and mobile devices.

Marc Prensky was pretty good. He is more of a futurist than truly an educator. His information was interesting to think about. He talked about Passion and it’s importance. He also talked about focusing on the kids.

Dr. Mayim Bialik talked about a tutor that she had that made a difference in her life. Her parents were teachers. It wasn’t until she was 15 that she learned that she loved science. She talked about how she is representing Texas Instruments here. She talked a little about being a teacher in the “Home school” community.

Our conversation on the way home:
A) way too much “commercial” conversation. The QualComm representative isn’t to be blamed. That is basically her role. Why ISTE chose to put her on stage is another question.
B) Dr. Bialik was disappointing. She never talked about her role/experience as a neuroscientist. Rather, at one point, she said “there are probably people in the audience more qualified than I am to answer”… In fact, she repeated this a couple of times. Marc Prensky was asked a question about the effect of “screens” on the development of the brain. He answered and then threw it over to “the neuroscientist”. She completely passed.
C) Marc Prensky also brought up the idea of the 15% of kids who are successful in school and will be despite/ in spite of the educational system. What about the other 85%, he asked.
This led to a rich discussion on the walk. Dr. Bialik was on stage, in front of 13,000 educators. Her experience was abnormal (in the sense that it was not normal). She is currently involved with home school kids. Are these part of the 15%? Are these kids who really don’t need any change in the system? How does this impact the 85%?

We also chatted about the effect that business and the business model has had on education. That discussion will have to wait.

Overall, it was a disappointing Keynote. Sir Kenneth Robinson was good. However, there was a way, way long commercial for ISTE at the beginning. The panel discussion didn’t work. Had the panel been comprised of Sir Ken, Marc Prensky and a couple more educators, it may have been fruitful. However, as it was, two of the panel members just couldn’t contribute much.

Ah, well. Here’s hoping the sessions are effective tomorrow.
